Cornwall To Host First-Ever Cyclocross Event
Roughly 200 cyclocross racers from across Eastern Ontario will be descending on Cornwall this weekend as the city hosts the sixth-leg of the Eastern Ontario Cyclocross Race Series.
The event is the sixth stop on the 10-race series, and it's the first-ever stop in Cornwall.
The racing will take place on Sunday, October 30 at the east end of Lamoureux Park, east of the Cornwall Curling Centre. The races will start at 9 am (for Under-17 and younger, Women, Master B Men and older, and Novices), with the second race starting at 10:45 am (Elite Men, Master A Men & Junior Men). The participants will range in age from 8 to 70.
The race field will consist of some of the best racers in Canada, including former and current National and Provincial age category champions, as well as Cornwall’s own Derrick St. John, who has won silver at the Canadian National Cyclocross Championships. St. John has achieved numerous top ten finishes in international cyclocross races over the years.
"He's been all over the U.S. and Europe doing cross races," said event organizer Bob Woods of St. John. "He's very good."
The Ottawa Bicycle Club is hosting the event in cooperation with Cornwall's Total Cyclery and Sports.
Woods said they had Cornwall on their radar as a potential race destination for quite some time, and they finally decided to add it as a destination based on a recommendation from Marc Dubuc of Total Cyclery.
"It's a really nice park," Woods said of Cornwall's waterfront area.
Woods said the race will generate economic spin-offs for the community, and it will also draw some newcomers to Cornwall.
Cyclocross is the fastest growing discipline in cycling, and it's popularity is skyrocketing worldwide. Special cyclocross bikes are used (think of a road bike with narrow mountain bike tires) as racers ride on grassy fields, dismount off their bikes and carry them over barriers, run up steep, short hills and ride through sand pits or mud (depending upon conditions).
