Cornwall Calendar Raising Funds for Prostate Cancer Research
There are a lot of good things that happened in the 1970s, but it is debatable if men's fashion is one of them. Yet, according to local photographer Jason McNamara and his friend Jamie McLennan, there is much to love about the way men looked in that dubious decade, and they have captured that look in a hilarious new calendar called the "Manly Men of Movember".
"One of my friends (Marc Bray) asked me in November if I had thought of doing a calendar for Movember - the odd campaign of men growing moustaches to raise funds for prostate cancer research," recalls Jason. "I thought it was a great idea - there is a lot of great imagery associated with moustaches."
An accomplished photographer known for creating powerful images, Jason created a contest on his Facebook, inviting Cornwall-area men who were participating in Movember to send in a picture. People could then vote for their favourite "moustache".
"I called my friend Jamie McLennan who is a very talented designer and asked if he wanted to help," added Jason. "Jamie immediately said yes and his company Cyan Solutions donated the printing."
The response to the contest was immediate and very positive.
"I now had the models, but I hadn't actually thought out the how or where or when part and scheduling was a bit of an issue", said Jason. "Olympia Bowling Lanes was willing to let us use a lane for a few hours and we all got together and got it done. My apologies to those that we couldn't get in."
Jason and Jamie got together over the holidays, with Jamie designing the layout of the calendar around Jason's photographs. The final result is a high quality calendar that features 70's era colours and typeface. Each page of the calendar features the models wearing what can only be described as "inspired" clothing.
The calendar features the following men posing with their moustaches firmly in place: Jay St.Louis, Dan Allaire, Justin Rogers, Joe McLennan, Jay Menard, Todd Sauve, Dave Clark and Jamie McLennan. Ryan Chaytor, Erik Trudeau and Jeff Bradbury were unable to make the shoot.
"The photo shoot was a riot. We laughed and laughed some more. We were all strangers meeting for the first time and left as friends," said Dan Allaire (the model for the month of May). "Kudos to Jason McNamara for this great idea and experience . I can't wait to try and get in again next year."
Over 80 copies of the calendar have already been sold. Calendars will remain on sale for $15 for as long as quantities remain. 100 percent of the proceeds are being donated to Movember Canada. People looking to obtain a copy of the calendar can contact Jason via Facebook or his website at FramedPhotography.ca
"The inspiration was simply to raise some money and make a cool calendar that we would like," said Jason. "The bonus was to work with Jamie. We had been talking about collaborating for a long time.
During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in Canada and around the world. With their “Mo’s”, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer.
Since its humble beginnings in Melbourne Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 1.1 Million participants. The funds raised in Canada are directed to programs run directly by Movember and our men’s health partner, Prostate Cancer Canada.
