Ontario Hockey Academy Small Business Of The Year
The City of Cornwall has a rich hockey history, and a new chapter is currently being added to that story by the Ontario Hockey Academy.
In four short years, the private academic/athletic prep school on Vincent Massey Drive has more than doubled in size, with 120 students now enrolled. A number of the school’s graduates have already earned scholarships to some of the top Universities in the U.S. and they are now making their mark in those locales.
Many of the school’s students hail from outside of the Cornwall area – including the U.S., Europe and beyond – so needless to say, OHA’s presence in the community generates significant economic spin-offs for the local economy.
The OHA’s quick rise to success was recently recognized as the school was awarded the 2011 Small Business of the Year Award at the Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards. OHA founder Giles Lascelle was on hand to accept the award along with his wife Kim.
Mrs. Lascelle said the original idea was to establish a women’s hockey program to help young women go on to play collegiate hockey. That idea has since grown to include full-fledged academic and hockey programs for both young men and women in a campus-like facility complete with in-house bedrooms, classrooms, a cafeteria and a state-of-the-art gym and training facility.
Mrs. Lascelle said Cornwall itself has been a positive factor in the school’s overall success.
“Aside from our academics and training, our biggest selling point is being like a family,” said Mrs. Lascelle. “The parents (of students) want them to be safe and they get that in Cornwall.”
The Small Business of the Year Award is presented annually to a non-manufacturing organization of less than 50 employees. Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lezlie Strasser said the Ontario Hockey Academy was a very worthy recipient of the award.
“In addition to the excellent work they do with their students, the Ontario Hockey Academy has created new jobs and numerous economic benefits for the community,” said Ms. Strasser. “They are also helping to raise Cornwall’s profile as they compete in hockey rinks throughout Canada and the United States.”
