Benson CentreA group of promising young hockey players will be looking to take their game to the next level this weekend at a Junior Hockey Combine taking place at the Benson Centre.

The three-day event kicks off on June 1st, and 26 junior-age players from the Cornwall area, Ottawa, Petawawa, Windsor and the U.S. will be showcasing their skills in front of a group of coaches and scouts from the junior and college hockey ranks.

It’s the first time a combine of this nature is held at Cornwall’s new multi-sport facility, and organizers Ryan Kuhn and Pat McLeod have been busy planning the event since January. Mr. Kuhn said the event will give the local hockey players some added exposure as they prepare to embark on their junior hockey careers.

“We’re hoping that people hear about it and have a good experience and they feel it’s a worthwhile product,” said Mr. Kuhn, himself a former junior hockey player.

Some of the coaches and scouts that are taking part include former NHLer Dan Daoust, who is now working for the Markham Waxers, St. Lawrence University Coach and former Cornwall Aces captain Mike Hurlbut, Steve Bisson, a scout with the OHL’s Guelph Storm, and Cornwall natives Rick Lalonde, Brent Loney and Josh Loney.

Toronto company Sport Testing will be running the combine, which will include both on- and off-ice testing. In addition, there will be a pair of seminars with Sport Psychologist Benoit Veilleux and Chiropractor and Health Coach Dr. Marie-Josee Cardinal.

All of the events will be held at the Benson Centre.

“It’s great to see an event like this taking place at the Benson Centre,” said Christine Lefebvre, the City’s Parks & Recreation Division Manager. “It’s another example of how the Benson Centre is helping to attract people to our City.”
