Cornwall Seaway Lions Club RibfestCornwall, ON - People will have a chance to enjoy a full menu of live entertainment, carnival rides, family activities and of course, some great ribs, as the Cornwall Seaway Lions Club Ribfest descends on Lamoureux Park from Friday, July 27th to Sunday, July 29th.

A first of its kind for Cornwall, Ribfest will feature some of the best ribbers from across North America in addition to local food vendors, a midway courtesy of Classic Amusements and a full slate of free entertainment and activities over the course of the three-day event.

“People seem to be really enthused about this event,” said Terry Muir, the head organizer for Ribfest.

Finger-Licking Ribs

A ribfest is a popular type of food festival that occurs throughout North America. The size of each ribfest is often measured by the number of traveling professional "rib teams" which sell food and compete at the events.

Six different rib teams from Canada and the United States will be offering their wares throughout the Cornwall’s Ribfest, and Mr. Muir said rib lovers are in for a real treat. The ribbers each have their own unique recipes, and ribs will sell for $13 for a half rack or $22 for a full rack. The teams include:

  • the Texas Rangers (originally from Motley, Texas and now based in Ontario)
  • Ribs Royale (Nevada)
  • Crabby’s BBQ Shack (London, Ontario)
  • Fatboy’s Smokehouse (Milwaukee)
  • The Chop Shop (North Carolina).

The ribbers will be accompanied by a number of other food vendors selling ice cream, blooming onions, deep fried desserts and other treats.

“It’s great to see a new community event taking place in Lamoureux Park and I have no doubt that Ribfest will become a fixture on Cornwall’s summer event calendar for years to come,” said Mayor Bob Kilger.

Ribfest organizers have put together a great lineup of live music for the festival.  Friday night kicks off with headliner Marshall Dane and The Law. Dane is a rising Canadian country star and is touring to promote his 2011 album “Running Stop Signs.”   The hard-working band Ambush brings a popular combination of country and rock that has led to a large number of followers particularly in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. Local favourites Trench Town Oddities gets thing started with their own eclectic blend of pop, funk, rock, blues and reggae.

On Saturday local band SwitchGear is one of four bands opening for ABBAMANIA. SwitchGear plays an energetic brand of country rock that will set the stage for one of most authentic cover acts anywhere.

The music spills over on Sunday with two more amazing cover bands, Queen Flash and the Bayou Boys, covering Queen and Creedence Clearwater Revival respectively. Here is the complete music lineup:

Midway and Other Events

Ribfest will feature a midway of games of chance and amusement rides – something for everyone! The midway will be operated by Glengarry-based Classic Amusements, a family oriented travelling carnival that is Canadian owned and operated.

Among other activities to enjoy, festival-goers will have a chance to see the Chainsaw Lady of Dunvegan, and participate in putting and chipping contests. The Royal Canadian Legion will be providing breakfast on Saturday July 28th and Sunday July 29th.

The idea of hosting a Ribfest took root last fall when one of the rib teams saw Lamoureux Park and began asking about the chances of hosting a rib festival in the park. Mr. Muir and the Cornwall Seaway Lions Club soon got on board. A group of people were also talking about it on Facebook so that made it easier to garner support for the event.

Sponsors and supporters quickly jumped on board, and in addition to the 24 Lions Club members, Mr. Muir said over 100 people have stepped forward to help out as volunteers.

“The support is really there now,” he added.

The Lions Club are big champions of youth causes in the community, and Mr. Muir said it was a good fit for the service club to get involved in organizing a family-friendly festival.

“We’re all about helping the kids. That’s what makes it worthwhile,” Mr. Muir said.

Based on the success of Ribfest events in others cities, Cornwall Seaway Lions Club Ribfest promises to be a major event for the Cornwall area. With expected attendance of over 20,000 people and great entertainment, combined with the sweet smell of BBQ ribs, it is a surefire recipe for success!
