Don Fairweather, Cornwall Campus Dean, St. Lawrence CollegeCornwall, Ontario - The Cornwall Campus of St. Lawrence College is abuzz with students this fall – in fact, a record 1255 full-time and 300 part-time students. Approximately 20% of the students are from out of town, with 15 international students from 7 different countries.

“Many of our programs are at full capacity, which is great to see,” says Don Fairweather, Campus Dean.

Five years ago, full-time enrollment was at 940 students, and a lot of demographic studies suggested that St. Lawrence College would have fewer high-school students to recruit from. Instead, a mix of innovative programming and a surge in interest in a College education has helped turn those projections around.

“Our Health Sciences programs have proven to be very popular, but it is not just programming that is attracting new students,” says Mr. Fairweather.  “We are noticing an increasing number of university graduates recognize the value of adding a College diploma to their largely theoretical university learning. There are also a growing number of students who use their College studies as a pathway to a university degree. In this day and age, a post-secondary education which includes practical field experience makes you more attractive to employers.”

The Cornwall campus offers a wide range of programming that includes programs in  Applied Arts, Business, Community Services, Computer and Engineering Technology, Healthy Sciences, Justice Studies and Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship.

“Enrolment in all of our programs is solid across the board,” says Mr. Fairweather.

With so many students on campus, and every program thriving, the College has created two more classrooms in Aultsville Hall to accommodate the demand. It has also spent some money to enhance the lobby area of the ground floor of the building outside of Aultsville Theatre. These improvements come on the heels of a $14 million redevelopment program that saw major improvements campus-wide.

In just a few weeks, the campus will get even busier as over 50 additional trades students will attend classes for 8 weeks as a part of their Apprenticeship Training program. The College’s Corporate Learning and Performance Improvement division will also launch Level 2 of their popular continuing education program in Leadership in late October.

In January, the College launches a new 18 week intensive program aimed at educating students in Supply Chain and Logistics Techniques. This is the part of the College’s efforts to establish a Centre of Excellence for the supply chain sector. Next September, a new Supply Chain Management post-diploma program will be rolled out as part of this effort.

“We are constantly working with the community to identify new opportunities for programming and the supply chain courses are a perfect example of that,” said Mr. Fairweather. “Cornwall is a great place to come for an education, and a great place to stay on afterwards and build a career.”
