Local Photographer Spearheads Manly Men Fundraiser
Cornwall Ontario - A local photographer and a graphic designer with Cornwall ties are helping to raise awareness of men’s health issues in Cornwall by putting a unique twist on the popular Movember movement.
Manly Men founders Jason McNamara (Framed Photography) and Ottawa-based graphic designer Jamie McLennan are inviting Movember participants to submit a photo of their moustache through the Manly Men website for a chance to be featured in the 2013 Manly Men of Movember Calendar. Residents can vote for their favourite “mentries” throughout the month of November, and the top 12 vote-getters will be featured in the calendar.
The contest caught on quickly, with hundreds of votes already being cast for the dozens of entries that have been received.
“We’re still having people enter the contest,” said Mr. McNamara, adding that participants are using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to encourage family and friend to cast their votes.
Proceeds from the calendar – as well as sales of related T-shirts and hoodies – will be donated to Movember Canada in support of prostate cancer and men’s mental health initiatives.
The photo shoot for the calendar will take place on December 1st, and Manly Men will follow that up with a kick-off event for the calendar on December 14th at Vu Night Spot on First Street East. In addition to selling the calendars, officials will also be on hand to speak about men’s mental health issues. The calendar models will also be in attendance.
“They (the mental health professionals) are really excited about it,” said Mr. McNamara, noting it’s not easy to get a group of men together to talk about health issues.
The calendar isn’t a new endeavour for the Manly Men co-founders. The duo created a similar calendar last year on a spur of the moment idea and ended up raising several hundred dollars. This year, they’ve taken it to another level with the interactive contest and website, and they expect to raise even more money.
For Mr. McNamara, the project provides an opportunity for him to put his photography skills to use for an important issue.
“It’s a good cause and it’s easy to market this particular cause,” he said.
As for Manly Men, the calendar may only be a starting point. Mr. McNamara said they are exploring non-profit status and looking at expanding the group’s focus to include other charity-related events and activities throughout the year. The ultimate goal, he added, would be to get more men involved in donating their time and efforts to community fundraisers and events and help to build good role models for the community.
