VIA Rail CornwallCornwall Ontario - VIA Rail has announced improvements in its train service to Cornwall.

The passenger rail company has reinstated late train service in Cornwall between Montreal and Toronto on Friday and Sunday evenings.

As part of the changes, VIA Train 68 will leave Toronto at 6 pm on Fridays and Sundays and it will arrive in Cornwall at 9:45 pm before continuing to Montreal.

VIA Train 69 will leave Montreal at 6:30 pm on Fridays and Sundays and arrive in Cornwall at 7:43 pm before continuing on to Kingston, Oshawa and Toronto.

The changes take effect today.

Earlier this year, VIA Rail announced a series of schedule changes, including the cancellation of evening train stops in Cornwall.

"I would like to thank VIA Rail for partially restoring evening train service in our community, and I hope they will see fit to make additional service enhancements in the future," said Mayor Kilger. "Evening train service is important for members of our business community who may wish to travel to Montreal or Toronto and return the same day. This is a good first step towards addressing that need."

Cornwall currently has 8 trains that stop in Cornwall (4 eastbound to Montreal, 4 westbound to Toronto). The new trains provide a 5th option on Fridays and Sundays.

"I would also like to thank MP Guy Lauzon, MPP Jim McDonell, the Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce and the numerous Cornwall residents who contacted VIA Rail in response to the schedule changes announced earlier this year," Mayor Kilger added.

The VIA rail station is located in the central part of Cornwall, a block west of Pitt Street and Balmoral Avenue.
